Nextgate helps healthcare organizations improve data quality and reduce errors. While implementing interface engines in the early 1990s, we noticed a significant increase in the amount of duplicate and incomplete patient records. Previously, data stayed within its own silo, but now that applications became integrated, there was no easy or automatic way to compare patient identifiers to see if information was being shared about the same patient. This issue caused multiple duplicate records and contaminated data quality. Because this technical issue could impact a patient’s health, we made it our goal to find a solution.

HIMSS North America, a business unit within HIMSS, positively transforms health and healthcare through the best use of information and technology in the United States and Canada. As a cause-based non-profit, HIMSS North America provides thought leadership, community building, professional development, public policy, and events.

HIMSS North America represents 70,000 individual members, 630 corporate members, and over 450 non-profit organizations. Thousands of volunteers work through HIMSS to leverage the potential of digital health to improve both the health status of populations, as well as the quality, cost-effectiveness, access, and value of healthcare. Major initiatives within HIMSS North America include the HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition, National Health IT Week, HIMSS Innovation Center, HIMSS Interoperability Showcases™, HIMSS Health IT Value Suite, ConCert by HIMSS™, HIMSS Professional Communities and HIMSS Chapters.

 

Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) offer enormous opportunity for patients and providers to work together to achieve enhanced quality of care, reduced costs and improved health outcomes. As a market-based solution, ACOs rely on groups of physicians, hospitals, and other providers voluntarily collaborating to achieve these important goals. As of 2017, there are 525 Medicare ACOs serving more than 10 million beneficiaries with hundreds more commercial and Medicaid ACOs serving millions of additional patients. The accountable care model has a long history of bipartisan support, starting with the Physician Group Practice Demonstration Program passed under President George W. Bush’s administration in 2000 and further expanded under President Obama’s administration. ACOs are proving to be one of the most promising solutions to bend the cost curve and provide high-quality patient care and are a premier payment model in the shift to value-based care.

ACOs from around the country came together to form NAACOS with the following mission:

  •    Foster growth of ACO models of care;
  •    Participate with federal agencies in development and implementation of public policy;
  •    Provide industry-wide uniformity on quality and performance measures;
  •    Educate members in clinical and operational best practices;
  •    Collectively engage the vendor community, and
  •    Educate the public about the value of accountable care.
